However, changing a domain name is not that easy, or it can be impossible for someone. If you do so, you may need to compromise with its performance.
In this post, I am sharing some useful tips to come up with a perfect blog name. So, if you have planned to start a new blog, then follow these blog name ideas.
Things to consider before Naming a Blog:
If you are concerned about traffic, branding, name recognition and long-term success, then you must consider the below things before naming your blog.
Decide the Niche or Blog topic is about:
This is the first step to follow. Choose the niche or subject that your blog is going to deal about. This is the most important thing to get targeted audience.
You can create a multi-niche site. However, if you want to be authoritative, then single or micro-niche sites give the best results. A single niche site can give you loyal customers and subscribers that help to reduce bounce rate.
Types of Blog Names
After selecting the niche, you can go with any of the following name types that suitable to your site.
Descriptive names are straightforward names that describe the purpose of the blog is all about.
For single niche site, Descriptive names are more useful.
Example: dailyblogtips.com, bloggertipstricks.com, cartrade.com
Advantage: These are direct names, so anyone can easily guess the topics covered in these blogs. Thus, improve the click through rate. See the above example.
These types of names are easy to invent, easy to recognize.
These names are good for a search engine, and you can dominate the niche because that sounds as authoritative.
Disadvantage: In popular niche, most of the names are already taken by others, so it is hard to find the desired domain name.
If you come up with descriptive names you can not expand your topic in future, you have to limit your topic. For example in cartrade.com, you cannot write about computer gadgets.
Descriptive domain sometimes looks as copycat when alongside with similar names. For users, it may difficult to find the right website. Moreover, you have to face too much competition.
Example: bloggertipstricks.com, bloggertipsandtricks.com, blogtipsntricks.com
General names are the fancy names that do not describe anything about the blog topic. It may contain the author name or just some familiar and fancy words. The main purpose of these names is to compliment the position of the blog or to make it a brand.
Example: amazon.com, neilpatel.com (name of the author), google.com
Advantage: As I said these names do not describe the topic, so you can expand the focus in future without worry.
A catchy and cool domain name helps you to make a potential brand that dominates your niche.
Moreover, you can easily generate a unique and engaging name.
Disadvantage: again, it does not describe anything means, difficult to guess the topic, and it may be challenging to recognize.
These names have no value to a search engine, so you need to invest more to make it a brand.
Suppose, if you come up with your name as a site name, it may be hard to spell depending on your name.
Hybrid domain name:
These are the combination of Descriptive name and general Names used to make attractive and some meaningful Domain name.
For Example, seobook.com, techcrunch.com
Brainstorm top keywords:
You know, the importance of keywords in SERP’s.
So, why we should not use the top related keyword in our domain name to make it search engine friendly?
If you decide to stick with micro-niche site, keyword in domain name is always a good idea; it describes the focus of your blog. However, it is not a thumb rule.
Select the top 5-10 keywords related to your subject and mix it with prefixes or suffixes and create the perfect blog name. You can use adjectives or your name along with keywords. Here is the list of adjectives for you.
Make the blog name unique that easy to brandable
The unique Blog name looks more branded than, just a combination of words or keywords. Moreover, if you are serious about your business to make it brand, the brandable names are always a better choice.
For example, ‘backlinko.com’ sounds more branded than ‘buildbacklinksforseo.com.’
Copyblogger.com name is much better than ‘onlinecopywritingtips101.com.’
The main advantage of brandable site names is, they are easy to recognize.
Note: For long term success always select the unique name. You can avoid unnecessary adjectives such as top, best, hot and don’t use the plural form of existed website’s name.
For suppose, If “example.com” is already available, don’t make your domain name as “bestexample.com” or “examples.com.”
It should be easy to remember
I always prefer to make a domain name that is easy to remember. Why?
Let’s say; if any user has come to your site through Google and found your website more useful, and he wants to return in future or recommend to others. You may know what will happen if he forgot your site name. You will not only lose the customer but the loyal customer.
Make the domain name that passes phone test:
This is a crucial strategy to follow while creating a blog name. If you say your blog name via phone, in meeting or conference, they will be able to reach the correct website without confusing about spelling.
Avoid commonly misspelled words. If possible try to avoid the words that have a different spelling in US-English and UK-English.
Reject Hyphens and Numbers. The problem with numbers is that it may be not clear, whether the number should spell out or not.
For example, consider a word like “1st-ranker.” If anyone heard this name on the phone without knowing actual spelling, naturally he or she think as the “first ranker.” Both hyphens and numbers are hard to type and remember.
So, always choose the name that passes phone test. Look at my domain name readyforblog.com. When I speak this name over Google Voice Search, it recognizes as ready for blog.com. See, no spelling difference.
Keep it short and simple
See the below example:
‘www.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch.com.’ can you remember this name or at least, pronounce it. Although this is world’s longest domain name based on real place in the UK.
However, to make your blog as a brand, always prefer to use short and simple words. That should be easy to type and easy to remember.
Ex: icloud.com, bing.com, facebook.com.
Always go with dot-com (.com) version:
Until and unless you want a short term blog with country specific, always go with dot-com TLDs. This is one of the most recognized TLD. It helps to make your blog brandable because it looks as more authoritative and more accessible. Even in countries like the US, it seems as default extension.
Moreover, most of the people do not remember TLDs; they just remember blog title and their mind automatically pictures “yourblogname.com” as the address. So, dot-com is always the best choice to get more readers and better search ranking.

Select the name that available on all the major social platforms
I always suggest, choose the blog name that is available on all major social media platforms such as Google+, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
Like your blog name is taken as the username for that social media sites, so people can easily get in touch with you. This allows your business to be seen and recognize in more places.
After deciding the name, use namechk.com to see if your desired username or vanity URL is still available in all majorities of social bookmarking websites.
Avoid copyright infringement
Before naming your blog; you have to make sure that the name you are going to use is not copyrighted. So, it is better to avoid the name of the already existing brand.
